If you die enough times in a level, then exit with an Aku Aku mask from that level and re-enter (by going to the end, not by quitting through the Pause menu), you will be given another Aku Aku mask for a golden mask. You can use this if you're having trouble with any part of the level. If you die even more times, one of the regular boxes will turn into a checkpoint box. If you die enough times in a level without hitting any new checkpoint boxes, you will get a free Aku Aku mask every time you respawn. It's fine if you die and respawn at the start of the level, or die in the bonus stages and respawn near the bonus platform otherwise you will have to leave to the warp room and go 's even worse if you're doing Totally Bear and Totally Fly. For the break all boxes without dying achievements, it's OK to die as long as you DON'T RESPAWN AT A CHECKPOINT BOX.
